1. Today will be an easy lesson on the hawai’ian language. This is one of the first things you learn as a child. In Hawai’i this is how you learn the vowels and the consonants. First the pronunciation. It is made into a song and motions, which I can’t do right now. Ready?
A-(ah) E-(eh) I-(ee) O-(oh) U-(ooh) H-(hay) K-(kay) L-(lah) M-(moo) N-(noo) P-(pee) W-(vay)
2. A(ah) alapii A(ah) alapii means stairway
3. E(eh) elepani o ke kai E(eh) elepani o ke kai means elephant of the sea (walrus)
4. I(ee) ipuhao keleawe I(ee) ipuhao keleawe means an iron pot
5. O(oo) mahiai O oo is a spade to farm with
6. U(ooh) upa makani U(ooh) upa makani means bellows (makani-the wind)
7. H- hoki H hoki is a mule (ekake- donkey)
8. K- kao K- kao is a goat
9. L- liona L- liona is a lion
10. M- muumuu M- muumuu is a loose gown
11. N- nuhou N- nuhou means news
12. P- peahi P- peahi means a fan
13. W- waiwai nui W- waiwai nui means great wealth.
